Senior Celtic Coach Peter Cunningham has returned from Canberra after a week-long observation of the Australian Institute of Sport's women's basketball team. The seasoned state junior representative coach was awarded an annual AIS coaching scholarship for a week of his choice at the institute. Only one coach in Australia is offered the chance each year. Cunningham was shocked to learn he was accepted, not knowing he was nominated by Country Victoria. Cunningham coached the Victorian Country under-18 girls for four years, except for this season's national championships in Ballarat. He has moved into a development role at the Ballarat Basketball Asssociation as a liaison between the association's junior representative squads through to the Lady Nuggets and Lady Miners. Celtic Tigers win Max Bowman Shield The Club has returned triumphant from the Victorian Country Club Championships held in October 2008 in Bendigo. The Tigers came from the tournament overall winners for the ninth consecutive time in winning the Max Bowman Shield. The shield is awarded to the club which collects the most points by winning its round robbin games. About 70 players were sent to the tournament from the Tigers, with the under-14 girls, under-18 girls and under-16 boys sides winning titles.
Kym Cassells recently played her 1000th game - 486 of which were as a junior. In that time she has dropped 7119 points, as well as coaching many junior Celtic, BBA representative sides as well as her well known role as head coach of the Ballarat Community Health Lady Miners. On behalf of everyone here at Celtic and the broader Ballarat Basketball Community - we congratulate you Kym on your outstanding career as a great player, coach and ambassador for our sport.
Currently we have 20 girls teams, 24 boys teams, and 12 senior teams that compete on a weekly basis in the Ballarat Competition. We see ourselves as a club that provides for all age levels, from U/10 through to the seniors, and also caters for a range of skill levels (in all Grades) Click HERE to read our current Summer 2008 Newsletter Training Times
